For our final university project ( On The Edge Of Forever ), I did some shader options to add details with vertex paint on different objects.
Julio Cadet-Richard used my shader to texture the boat ( He also did the mesh of the boat)
Alex fillion used my shader to do the cloth, he also did the level art of the cloth and the mesh

In one of the shader i added the option to have 3 different materials that you can paint on top of the basic material. You can also add a different mask for every material for the shape of the vertex painted materials.
In somes of the master materials i added an option to add a second normal on another UV set to add some detail in trim sheet.
Some shaders have an option to paint holes. This is really useful to add wear on objects.
You can change the intensity of the blending for every material
For the cloth shader i kept the same system to paint hole, but you can also put translucency and add a trimsheet in the opacity .
